Austin, TX - Logan D. McNatt (August 5, 1950 - June 3, 2026) was a distinguished caver, archaeologist, author, collector, storyteller, and proud Texan. His lifelong passion for exploration, discovery, and environmental preservation left an indelible mark on speleology, Maya cave research, and Texas archeology.

Born in Abilene, Texas, Logan was the youngest son of Ernie Glen McNatt and Helen Hartwig Kothmann McNatt. He grew up in a close-knit family alongside his older brother, Randy. In 1957, the family relocated to Brownwood, Texas, where his father established a Social Security office. Logan excelled academically, played saxophone in the school band, and competed on the tennis team while in high school. In 1967, he won the Texas AAA State Tennis Championship and graduated third in his class from Brownwood High School in 1968.

Throughout his career, Logan explored at least 338 caves across Texas, New Mexico, Alabama, Mexico, and Belize. In 1972, he was part of the first group of cavers to discover and descend into Mexico's El Sótano del Barro, one of the largest and deepest vertical pits in the world. Returning to Texas in 1993, Logan worked as an archaeologist with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department's Archeology Survey Team until his retirement in 2012.

Known affectionately in Belize as "Logan Mon!" and to family and friends as "LowGun," he will be remembered for his adventurous spirit, sharp wit, encyclopedic knowledge, generosity, loyalty, and dedication to the natural world. His legacy endures through the caves he explored, the archaeological research he advanced, and the countless lives he touched.

Logan was preceded in death by his brother, Randy McNatt. He is survived by his nephew Eric McNatt; cousins Beverly Bormuth, Dawn Manzo, and Crystal Kothmann Kinney; and many friends and colleagues who will cherish his memory.
