Marcia Potts

Marcia was an amazing woman. Everyone who ever knew her was touched by her kindness and love. She sent out more than a thousand birthday cards a year to people she knew far and wide.

She spent most of her life in Bethesda Md where she worked at NIH for almost 40 years. She worked in Child Psychology for a world renowned expert on OCD. Everyone who worked in that office had OCD to some degree. She had many interesting stories about that time. Eventually, she worked in the Public Safety department retiring after her health began to seriously decline.

Even though NIH was her primary job it was her side hustles that she enjoyed doing. She worked at the Tastee Diner, bartended at the American Legion, The Twist and Shout (made famous by the Mary Chapin Carpenter song) and Tornado Ally. Marcia loved music and throughout her life followed the local music scene.

In 2013, she moved to Austin to live with one of her sisters. Although disabled, she volunteered at SXSW for several years. They gave her a great sit-down job, checking wristbands of musicians getting on the elevator to the hospitality area. She got to know bands and musicians from all over the world. She absolutely loved it! She became known for her humor and pranks and her quick wit. She would carry a fake ketchup squeeze bottle and pretend to squirt ketchup on people.

The last 2 years were really physically hard for her. She survived a cardiac arrest - a three month hospital stay. She moved into assisted living at Parson's House. She very quickly made friends with residents and staff all of whom were added to her birthday list. She celebrated every holiday and made the residents feel loved. They were planning a surprise birthday party but she died the day prior. It was turned this into a Celebration of Life instead... on such short notice friends (including some out of towners), neighbors, residents, and staff showed up (on their days off) to celebrate Marcia.
